Overview

You're treated to two professional mentors on this 10-day tour around the North West of Ireland. For this trip, Gareth is joined by Tim Mannakee, an experienced photographer who has spent the last decade running photography workshops from his base in France. Together, Gareth and Tim will guide you around this wild and scenic corner of Ireland, made all the more atmospheric by the remote character of the region.

Itinerary

The tour begins and ends in Dublin. We begin by collecting you from the airport or from your hotel on the morning of 23rd September. We then travel together by private car to the country's wild Atlantic coast.

Days 1 & 2:    Our first destination is Connemara, in Country Galway. This remote, immensely scenic region is densely packed with mountains and lakes, as well as a stunning coastline. We'll photograph Ireland's only fjord at Killary Harbour, the gothic turrets of Kylemore Abbey, and the Twelve Bens and Maumturk Mountains. When not shooting, we'll retire to our base at the 4-star Rossleague Manor Hotel, a charming, 19th-century country house located some 13km outside Clifden.

Days 3 & 4:    The following two days are spent exploring the wild landscapes of County Mayo. Our base, the 4-star Mulranny Park Hotel, is located just a short distance from Achill Island. This is Ireland's largest Atlantic island, and a prime focus for field trips. Highlights include the fabulous view from the top of the Menawn Cliffs, the secluded cove of Keem, and the evocative remains of a deserted village that was abandoned during the Great Famine. Other photo spots nearby include Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick and Ballycroy National Park.

Days 5, 6 & 7:    We now head north, around Sligo Bay and into County Donegal. We base ourselves on the Rosguill Peninsula, one of the county's remote northern headlands that feels miles from anywhere. Photo opportunities centre around the coastline, with Fanad Head Lighthouse, Great Pollet Sea Arch and the fabulous Boyeeghter Strand top of the list. Overnight we'll relax in the 4-star Rosapenna Hotel, set beside a golden beach in the small village of Downings.

Days 8 & 9:    Heading through the walled city of Derry into County Antrim, we spend the final few days exploring the unique scenery of the Causeway Coast. The twisted trees of the Black Hedges, the tiny harbour at Portbradden, and the mouldering cliff-top remains of Dunluce Castle are all prime locations. Our base, the Causeway Hotel, occupies a protected building dating from 1836. It allows easy walking access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Giant's Causeway, facilitating sunrise and sunset shoots from the rocks.

Day 10:    On the final day, we visit the Troubles-Era street murals in Belfast, before heading back towards Dublin. The tour finishes when we drop you off at at a location of your choice in Dublin city.

Accommodation and Food

The photography tour includes 9 nights of accommodation, in a range of characterful and atmospheric 3 and 4-star hotels. Every night is spent beside the sea, and we endeavor to provide rooms with sea views wherever possible. Two of the hotels also have on-site spas and other leisure facilities.

We spend two or three nights in each hotel, to minimise the amount of travel required each day.

Please note that breakfast is encompassed in the tour price, but no other meals are included. We will stop as appropriate each day to eat together in local cafés and restaurants, with each participant covering the cost of their own meals.

Practicalities

The focus of this tour is to explore the best photo locations the North West of Ireland has to offer. The main subjects are landscapes and coastline, though there will be elements of architecture and culture too. Dawn and dusk outings will be included whenever conditions are favourable.

As we explore each location, we will experiment with different shooting techniques and approaches to composition. During quiet spells in the hotel, we will analyse the shots we have taken, and there will be opportunities to extend your image processing skills for anyone who's interested. The overall aim is to take you to a series of beautiful locations, then share our professional experience in any way possible to help you produce more striking photos.

Please note that short stretches of off-road walking may be required to reach some of the locations visited. We recommend that you pack your camera equipment in a small rucksack to facilitate moving around, and bring good footwear and warm, waterproof clothing to protect yourself in all weather conditions.
