Mer de Glace, French Alps
At 14km long, the Mer de Glace is the second longest glacier in Europe. Its surface is characterised by a wave-like accumulations of debris that belie the flowing motion of the ice. For me the challenge was how to offset the stark terrain within a softer context. The pink flowers of an Alpine Rhododendron provided just the right foreground one June. A neutral density graduated filter helped to maintain an even exposure throughout.
