Lake Pedder, Tasmania
This image was taken from the summit of Mt Anne in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Lake Pedder was originally a much smaller natural lake until it was dammed in 1972 as part of a hydro-electric and water catchment scheme. At 242 sq km, 'new' Lake Pedder is now the largest body of fresh water in Australia. The damming of Lake Pedder was bitterly opposed by many environmentalists, and led to the formation of the world's first Green Party.
