The Causeway Coast of County Antrim is renowned worldwide for its wild beauty, and offers such a wealth of natural treasures, the opportunities for photographers are almost endless.
At the top of the location list is the Giant's Causeway, a unique collection of basalt columns that catches both summer sunsets and large ocean swells. Yet within a 20km radius there are a host of other spots, including Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Ballintoy Harbour, Dunluce Castle and Whitepark Bay. From natural rock arches and historic landmarks, to soaring sea cliffs and secluded coves, there is enough drama and variety here to fill several weeks of shooting.
Gareth is a native of Northern Ireland, and familiar with all the nooks and crannies of this coastline. Under his guidance you will discover both the famous sites, and several lesser-known vantage points that lie off the beaten track.
The photography workshop is based right at the heart of the Causeway Coast, in a spacious, self-catering house with panoramic views over Whitepark Bay. Breakfast is incorporated as standard, but no other meals are included. During the weekend we will stop to buy snacks and eat together in local cafés and restaurants, as dictated by the schedule of events.
The photography course will begin on the Friday evening with an informal welcome session. Here we'll go over the itinerary ahead, and discuss some of the main photographic issues we'll be considering during the workshop. Saturday, Sunday and Monday are the main activity days, when our time will be split between indoor theory sessions and outdoor field trips. The workshop ends at 3pm on Monday, to allow participants enough time to travel home on Monday evening.
The exact timing and location of the field trips will be dictated by local weather conditions on the day. The main objective is to explore the fabulous coastline of the Causeway area, but if necessary we may head further afield into the glens and hills of Antrim. 'Magic hour' trips will take advantage of sunrise and sunset wherever possible, and there will be an opportunity to learn more about night photography during a star-lit, nocturnal outing.
The itinerary will include a wide range of locations, each providing different challenges and opportunities for the photographer. As we explore each location we will experiment with different shooting techniques, and consider the merits of various camera functions and composition tricks to improve the final result.
All field trips will be undertaken by car-pool, with short stretches of off-road walking required to reach some locations. We recommend that you wear warm, waterproof clothing and suitable outdoor footwear, and carry your camera equipment in a small backpack to facilitate moving around.
The indoor sessions will take place in a communal room within the accommodation building. Here we will analyse the photos we have taken, and discuss ways of improving them. We will also discuss some of the issues behind taking great landscape photographs, including how to research the location and the importance of expressing yourself as an individual.
Technical sessions will look at different equipment and how to use it, and examine issues such as controlling depth of field and using histograms to understand exposure. There will also be tutorials on using Photoshop, Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw, where Gareth will take you through the steps of processing your images to achieve optimum results.
The overall aim of the workshop is to facilitate one big discussion about the art of photography. Gareth will endeavour throughout to share the experience he has gained over twenty years as a professional landscape photographer, to help you take more striking photos.
